One problem that I see with the co-op health care idea is that such organizations will have to compete against the insurance institutions that have been deemed too big to fail, like AIG, and pharmaceutical giants, like Pfizer, which is scheduled to complete a merger with Wyeth by the end of the year, thus making an already huge worldwide company even more powerful. Without government backing at least through infancy and adolescence, co-ops won't have much of a chance for survival. They will be thrown into a vicious competitive market place to be prey to the industry that already can manipulate the market -- and congress -- in its favor and sustain a strong PR compaign to convince the people not to join a co-op. And the people will be no better off then than they are now.
